About the Organization

The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is a leading international humanitarian agency, dedicated to the protection and support of refugees, internally displaced persons, and host communities across more than 40 countries. Founded on a bedrock of humanitarian principles, DRC has spent decades at the forefront of displacement crises, ensuring that those forced to flee their homes find safety and a path toward self-reliance. Our mission is to provide immediate life-saving assistance while simultaneously building the foundations for long-term, durable solutions.

In Ethiopia, our work is more than just service delivery; it is about restoring dignity in the wake of conflict and natural disasters. DRC Ethiopia operates with a vision of a world where every displaced person is protected and empowered. We pride ourselves on our deep-rooted community presence, which allows us to deliver high-quality aid that is both culturally sensitive and operationally efficient. Our organizational legacy is defined by our ability to remain in complex environments long after others have left, ensuring no community is forgotten.

We believe that our strength lies in our diversity. DRC is committed to creating a workspace where every individual, regardless of background, feels valued and heard. Our core values—Striving for Excellence, Collaborating, Taking the Lead, Communicating, and Demonstrating Integrity—are not just words on a page; they are the guiding principles that dictate how we interact with our colleagues and the communities we serve. We foster an environment of continuous learning and mutual respect.

Our commitment to inclusivity is a strategic priority. We understand that a diverse team brings a wealth of perspectives that are essential for solving the complex challenges of modern humanitarian work. We actively seek to build a workforce that reflects the populations we support, ensuring that our programs are designed with the empathy and insight that only a truly diverse team can provide.

Danish Refugee Council is committed to achieving gender parity in staffing at all levels. In light of this, women candidates and individuals from underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply to bridge the gender gap. We value diversity and strive to create an inclusive environment based on mutual respect for all employees.

Job Description and Strategic Impact

The Non-Technical Survey (NTS) Operator role is a cornerstone of DRC’s Humanitarian Mine Action programme. In regions like Tigray, the presence of explosive ordnance remains a significant barrier to safety, agriculture, and economic recovery. By identifying and assessing these hazards, the NTS Operator directly paves the way for land to be returned to communities, allowing children to play safely and farmers to till their soil without fear.

Strategically, this role is the "eyes and ears" of our mine action operations. The data collected by the NTS team determines the allocation of high-value clearance assets and dictates the priority of humanitarian interventions. Your impact is immediate and measurable; every hazard identified is a potential life saved and a step toward regional stabilization. This role ensures that DRC’s resources are directed toward the most vulnerable and high-risk areas.

In your day-to-day activities, you will engage deeply with local representatives, authorities, and community members. You will be responsible for gathering geographic and socio-economic impact information, ensuring that the human element of landmines—how they affect the daily lives of women, men, boys, and girls—is documented. This position offers a unique vantage point to see the direct results of your data-gathering efforts as they translate into cleared land and secure villages.

DRC offers a robust pathway for professional growth. As an NTS Operator, you will receive specialized training in International and National Mine Action Standards (IMAS/NMAS). This technical expertise, combined with the experience of working in remote and volatile field locations, builds a professional resilience that is highly sought after in the global humanitarian sector. You will be part of a team that values innovation in survey techniques and data management.

Furthermore, this role provides significant opportunities to develop leadership and liaison skills. By managing information networks and collaborating with Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE) facilitators, you will sharpen your ability to navigate complex stakeholder landscapes. Career development at DRC is supported by a culture of internal promotion and skill-building, aimed at preparing you for future supervisory or technical specialist roles.
