About the Organization

The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) stands as a foundational pillar for progress across the African continent. Established by the Economic and Social Council, its mission is centered on delivering transformative ideas and actions that empower African nations. By aligning its goals with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Africa’s own Agenda 2063, the ECA functions as a premier knowledge institution that bridges the gap between global expertise and local solutions.

The ECA is deeply committed to five strategic directions that define its modern legacy. These include advancing macroeconomic policy to spark job creation, designing innovative financing models for infrastructure, and addressing transboundary challenges such as peace and security. By working at the intersection of social inclusion and economic diversification, the ECA ensures that Africa’s voice is heard and respected within the framework of global governance.

Culture at the ECA is built upon a foundation of integrity, professionalism, and respect for diversity. Working here means joining a community of dedicated international civil servants who are passionate about sustainable development. The organization prides itself on being an environment where multicultural collaboration is the norm, and where every staff member is encouraged to contribute to a collective vision of a prosperous and integrated Africa.

Diversity is not just a policy at the ECA; it is a core strength. The organization recognizes that to serve the diverse populations of Africa effectively, its workforce must reflect that same variety of perspectives and backgrounds. By fostering an inclusive atmosphere, the ECA ensures that different viewpoints lead to more robust policy recommendations and more effective developmental programs.

The United Nations Secretariat and the ECA are steadfastly committed to achieving a 50/50 gender balance among its staff. In line with this commitment, women and members of underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply. The organization provides a supportive environment that values the unique contributions of every individual, ensuring that the path to leadership is accessible to all, regardless of gender identity or background.
