The Pharmacy Head position is responsible for leading the operations of No. 2 Pharmacy, ensuring the availability and proper management of essential medicines while maintaining high service standards.
Job Description
The Pharmacy Head is responsible for overseeing the overall management and operation of the pharmacy outlet. The role involves supervising staff, managing drug inventory, ensuring regulatory compliance, and maintaining the efficient delivery of pharmaceutical services.
The successful candidate will coordinate human, financial, and material resources to ensure the pharmacy operates effectively and continues to provide reliable access to essential medications.
This position also requires strong leadership skills, strategic planning ability, and a commitment to maintaining professional pharmacy standards.
Key responsibilities include:
• Managing the human resources, financial resources, and material resources of the pharmacy outlet to ensure efficient operations.
• Leading and motivating pharmacy staff to ensure duties and responsibilities are properly executed and service quality is maintained.
• Ensuring the pharmacy outlet is adequately equipped with the necessary staff, materials, and financial resources required for effective service delivery.
• Overseeing drug supply management including procurement, storage, and dispensing of safe, effective, and affordable essential medicines to community members.
• Ensuring strict compliance with regulatory requirements issued by the Food, Medicine and Healthcare Administration and Control Authority and the Ethiopian Red Cross pharmaceutical program.
• Conducting drug needs assessments to identify priority medicines that are most required by the communities served by the pharmacy.
• Ensuring all drugs are stored properly in accordance with pharmacopeia standards and national pharmaceutical storage regulations.
• Monitoring drug stock levels and requesting replenishment from the program’s central store or conducting authorized local purchases when necessary.
• Verifying drugs received from the central store against delivery documentation and inspecting drug conditions and expiration dates before acceptance.
• Evaluating the pharmacy’s drug distribution system and recommending improvements to enhance service efficiency.
• Ensuring expired, damaged, or spoiled drugs are safely disposed of according to regulatory guidelines and obtaining proper certification of destruction.
• Monitoring community feedback and market response to drugs distributed through the pharmacy to improve service quality.
• Ensuring all directives, policies, and operational procedures issued by the Ethiopian Red Cross Society and its pharmaceutical program are implemented effectively.
• Supervising pharmacy security arrangements including scheduling and monitoring guarding shifts.
• Preparing and submitting regular operational reports, requisitions, and other relevant documents to the Addis Ababa Branch Office.
• Performing other duties and responsibilities assigned by the Head of the Operations Division of the Addis Ababa Branch.
This leadership role contributes significantly to ensuring safe pharmaceutical services and improving access to essential medicines within the community.
Educational Qualification
Applicants must have one of the following qualifications:
• A Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy, or
• A College Diploma in Pharmacy or Druggist studies.
Candidates must also be registered as a Pharmacist or Druggist with the Ministry of Health (MOH) or the appropriate regulatory authority.
Professional certification and registration must be valid and recognized within Ethiopia.
Work Experience
Applicants must have 7 to 9 years of relevant professional experience in pharmacy practice or pharmaceutical service delivery.
Out of the total experience required, 4 to 5 years must be in a managerial or supervisory position, preferably within a pharmacy, healthcare facility, or pharmaceutical service organization.
Experience managing pharmacy operations, supervising pharmacy staff, and ensuring regulatory compliance will be considered highly valuable.
