Overall Purpose of the Role
The Protection Assistant (Monitoring) supports the implementation of protection monitoring activities in the field, ensuring systematic data collection, analysis, and reporting on protection risks, trends, and incidents affecting populations. The role contributes to evidence-based programming and informs timely protection responses.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Conduct regular field visits to collect protection-related information through household interviews, key informant interviews, focus group discussions, and direct observations. Support the implementation of protection monitoring tools, methodologies, and sampling strategies. Record, verify, and document protection concerns in line with data protection and confidentiality standards. Identify urgent protection risks and escalate cases according to internal referral pathways. Ensure accurate and timely entry of monitoring data into digital platforms or databases. Support data cleaning, validation, and analysis with guidance from the MEAL/Protection team. Assist in drafting weekly, monthly, and ad-hoc protection monitoring reports. Maintain organized records of field notes, datasets, and documentation. Support provision of regular contextual and situational updates on project implementation, challenges, or barriers. Prepare and submit weekly progress reports on protection activities. Ensure project activities are properly documented along with their respective means of verification.
Experience and Technical Competencies
Minimum of 2 years’ experience in an entry- to mid-level position in humanitarian protection or a relevant social service field. Experience in the Somali region is strongly preferred. Experience in the direct implementation of community-based protection and peace-building activities. Proven record of community engagement and consultation, including assessments, trainings, workshops, or awareness sessions. Technical understanding of protection concepts, prevention, and response strategies in line with best practices and ethical data collection and data protection protocols. Experience in identifying and responding to the needs of vulnerable individuals based on protection risks, age, gender, and diversity analysis or other criteria. Strong planning, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently and within a team. Integrity, strong work ethic, and ability to consistently meet deadlines under pressure. Commitment to learning and implementing organizational policies and procedures. Full proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel; proficiency in Kobo and other data collection/analysis tools is desirable.
Education
University degree in Social Work, Social Sciences, Law, or other relevant field from a recognized institution.
Language Requirements
Excellent speaking, reading, and writing skills in English. Fluency in Afaan Oromo and Somali is strongly preferred.
