Job Description:
The Infection Prevention and Control Supervisor plays a critical role in ensuring the safety of patients, caretakers, and healthcare staff through effective infection prevention and control (IPC) practices. This role involves planning, implementing, supervising, monitoring, and analyzing IPC programs in hospitals and healthcare facilities. The supervisor will collaborate closely with medical teams, service activity managers, and logistics staff to maintain high standards of hygiene, sterilization, and safety in all departments, including laundry, kitchen, and clinical areas.
The IPC Supervisor will actively participate in outbreak management and epidemic response, ensuring that contingency plans are activated efficiently. They will provide technical guidance, training, and mentorship to clinical, non-clinical, and support staff to maintain sustained compliance with IPC best practices. The role also involves conducting audits, risk assessments, and monitoring adherence to protocols, contributing to continuous quality improvement across supported facilities.
As a core member of the Infection Prevention and Control Committee, the supervisor will facilitate committee meetings, implement action plans, and coordinate with other quality-of-care initiatives such as antimicrobial stewardship. They will oversee the proper use of IPC materials and equipment, monitor consumption of cleaning supplies and PPE, and ensure safe patient flow and environmental hygiene.
Educational Qualification:
- Essential: Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Nursing or Midwifery with a valid license from the appropriate regulatory authority.
- Desirable: Degree or certificate in Infection Prevention and Control (IPC).
Work Experience:
- Essential: At least two (2) years of proven professional experience in IPC-related roles within a hospital or health facility setting.
- Desirable: Previous experience working with NGOs or NGO-supported health facilities. Experience in Operating Theatres (OT) or Intensive Care Units (ICU) is an asset.

Key Responsibilities:
- Implement and supervise IPC practices according to MSF and Ministry of Health protocols.
- Collaborate with medical teams to determine transmission-based precautions (airborne, droplet, contact).
- Provide regular training, mentorship, and technical supervision for clinical and non-clinical staff.
- Ensure adherence to hygiene standards, sterilization procedures, waste management, and safe handling of medical devices.
- Maintain organizational aspects of healthcare facilities including bed spacing, handwashing stations, and clean/dirty flows.
- Participate in hospital outbreak response, epidemic management, and contingency plan activation.
- Monitor and ensure rational use of IPC materials, equipment, and PPE.
- Collect, analyze, and report IPC indicators regularly to the relevant committees and management teams.
- Contribute actively to quality-of-care initiatives, including antimicrobial stewardship programs.
- Support recruitment, training, evaluation, and development of staff within the IPC team.
- Promote continuous improvement by identifying gaps and implementing practical solutions.
- Ensure availability and proper use of IPC educational materials, SOPs, and posters in all departments.
- Supervise hospital waste management and ensure compliance with safety and environmental standards.
- Participate in Infection Prevention and Control Committee meetings and follow up on action points.
- Conduct regular IPC assessments, audits, and risk analyses.
- Provide coaching on standard precautions, transmission-based precautions, environmental cleaning, and waste management.
- Support staff adherence to hand hygiene protocols, PPE use, and isolation practices.
- Facilitate a safe and inclusive working environment, encouraging diversity and professional growth.
- Ensure proper management of IPC supplies, including forecasting, rational use, and stock monitoring.
- Share timely feedback with supervisors and committee members to improve IPC practices continuously.
Job Location:
Korem Project – Alamata, Ethiopia. The role includes activities at Alamata Hospital and other MSF-supported facilities as needed.
Employment Type and Salary:
- Full-time, fixed-term contract.
- Starting monthly gross salary: 1,210 USD.
