About the Organization

CorpsAfrica is a visionary non-profit organization that recruits, trains, and sends college-educated young Africans to live in rural communities within their own countries to facilitate small-scale, high-impact development projects. Inspired by the model of the Peace Corps but led and executed by Africans for Africa, the organization aims to promote a culture of public service and professional leadership among the youth. In Ethiopia, CorpsAfrica provides a unique platform for young changemakers to apply their skills where they are needed most, bridging the gap between urban education and rural reality.

The mission of CorpsAfrica is rooted in the belief that local people are the best experts on their own challenges. By placing volunteers directly within these communities, the organization ensures that development is not "top-down" but rather a collaborative, organic process. This approach builds deep trust and creates sustainable solutions that continue to thrive long after the volunteer's service has ended. Working with CorpsAfrica is an opportunity to be part of a pan-African movement that is redefining humanitarian aid and civic engagement across the continent.

The organizational culture is one of profound humility, resilience, and adaptability. Volunteers are not just workers; they are community members who integrate into the local fabric, sharing the daily lives, joys, and challenges of the people they serve. This immersive experience fosters a unique brand of leadership—one that is empathetic, culturally aware, and grounded in practical problem-solving. It is an environment where "learning by doing" is the standard, and every challenge is viewed as an opportunity for mutual growth.

Professional development is a core pillar of the CorpsAfrica experience. Volunteers receive world-class training in Human-Centered Design (HCD), project management, and monitoring and evaluation. These skills are highly transferable and place alumni in a strong position for future careers in international development, public policy, or social entrepreneurship. The CorpsAfrica Alumni Network further provides a lifelong community of peers and mentors, ensuring that the spirit of service continues throughout a participant's professional life.

CorpsAfrica - Ethiopia is deeply committed to gender equity and the empowerment of young women as leaders of change. We believe that diverse perspectives are critical to solving complex rural challenges. Therefore, we strongly encourage female applicants and individuals from diverse academic and regional backgrounds to apply. We strive to create an inclusive cohort that represents the rich tapestry of Ethiopia, ensuring that every volunteer has the support they need to succeed in their service.

Job Description and Strategic Impact

The Community Development Volunteer position is a transformative role designed for young leaders who are ready to step outside their comfort zones and make a tangible difference. This is not an office-based job; it is a full-immersion experience where you will live and work within a rural Ethiopian community for the duration of your service. Your presence acts as a catalyst for local development, empowering community members to take charge of their own progress and future.

Strategically, this role is the heartbeat of CorpsAfrica’s mission. By conducting thorough needs assessments through community participation, you help identify the real, lived challenges of rural life. Your impact is measured not just in the projects you complete, but in the trust you build and the local capacity you strengthen. You will co-create solutions alongside residents, ensuring that every project—whether it relates to education, health, agriculture, or infrastructure—is wanted and owned by the community.

A "day-in-the-life" of a volunteer involves constant engagement. You might spend your morning helping a local farmer group, your afternoon facilitating a community meeting using Human-Centered Design tools, and your evening learning local traditions from your neighbors. You are a bridge-builder, connecting local needs with resources and stakeholders while maintaining a rigorous focus on monitoring, evaluation, and the long-term sustainability of every intervention.

The career development opportunities within this role are unparalleled. You will graduate from the program with a "masterclass" in community-led development. You will have proven your ability to manage budgets, lead diverse teams, and navigate complex social and cultural landscapes. For those who excel, there is a prestigious opportunity for a second year of international service in another CorpsAfrica country, expanding your impact and your professional network across the African continent.

Ultimately, your strategic impact lies in the shift of mindset you inspire. By demonstrating that young Ethiopians can and will serve their own rural communities, you are helping to build a new generation of patriotic, skilled, and empathetic leaders. Your work helps create resilient households and vibrant local economies, contributing directly to the national development goals of Ethiopia and the broader vision of a prosperous, self-reliant Africa.
