Job Description
The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is seeking a qualified and motivated professional for the position of Associate Human Rights Officer (P2) based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The position is located in the OHCHR Regional Office for East Africa and reports directly to the Regional Representative of the office and the Chief of the Business and Human Rights Section in Geneva.

The Associate Human Rights Officer will support the implementation of human rights programs and initiatives within the region, with particular attention to issues related to business and human rights.

The role involves conducting research, supporting policy analysis, and assisting in the monitoring and reporting of human rights developments across countries in East Africa.

The successful candidate will also contribute to promoting the implementation of international human rights standards, including the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.

Key responsibilities may include:

• Supporting research and analysis related to human rights issues in the region
• Assisting in the preparation of reports, background papers, and policy documents
• Contributing to monitoring and reporting on human rights situations
• Supporting capacity-building initiatives for governments and institutions
• Assisting in organizing workshops, consultations, and training programs
• Working with international partners and stakeholders to strengthen human rights protection
• Supporting advocacy and awareness initiatives related to human rights standards

Educational Qualification
Applicants must meet one of the following educational requirements:

• Advanced University Degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Law, Political Science, International Relations, Social Sciences, or a related field.

OR

• A First-Level University Degree combined with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted instead of an advanced degree.

Candidates who have passed the United Nations Young Professionals Programme (YPP), National Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE), or General Service to Professional (G to P) may apply with a first-level university degree even without work experience.

Work Experience
Applicants must have:

• A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in human rights, political affairs, international relations, law, or a related field.

Experience related to business and human rights, including work involving the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, is considered an advantage.

Experience working with international organizations, governments, or civil society institutions on human rights initiatives is also desirable.

Employment Type and Salary

Employment Type: Fixed-Term Appointment (FTA-limited)

The appointment may be extended depending on the continuation of the mandate and availability of funding.
