This position is part of an emergency humanitarian response program funded by the World Food Programme (WFP), focused on delivering life-saving cash assistance to internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Oromia Region.

Job Description

The Cash Assistant will support the effective implementation of WFP-funded cash assistance activities for IDPs. The role contributes directly to ensuring vulnerable families receive timely and transparent financial support during emergency situations.

The position involves supporting beneficiary registration, verification, coordination of cash disbursement, reconciliation processes, and documentation. The Cash Assistant ensures that activities are conducted in compliance with donor requirements and organizational standards.

The role works closely with Field Coordinators, Cash Officers, Finance teams, Financial Service Providers (FSPs), security personnel, and WFP focal persons to ensure smooth operations.

The Cash Assistant will help maintain accurate beneficiary records and ensure proper tracking of cash disbursements. Attention to detail and integrity are critical in ensuring accountability and transparency.

The role requires active participation in field activities, including registration exercises and verification processes. The Cash Assistant will ensure that beneficiaries are treated respectfully and fairly.

The position also supports reconciliation of financial documents and preparation of reports as required by the project team and donors.

Child safeguarding responsibilities are central to this role. The position involves regular contact with children and vulnerable populations and requires strict adherence to child protection policies.

The Cash Assistant must comply with anti-fraud, anti-corruption, and code of conduct policies, reporting any suspected irregularities immediately.

This role offers exposure to emergency programming and humanitarian cash transfer mechanisms, which are highly valued skills in the development sector.

Educational Qualification

Bachelor’s degree in one of the following fields:

  • Economics
  • Accounting
  • Finance
  • Business Administration
  • Social Sciences
  • Development Studies
  • Or other related disciplines

A strong academic foundation in financial management, economics, or social sciences will be highly beneficial for this role.

Work Experience

Minimum of 2 to 4 years of relevant experience in:

  • Cash transfer programming (CTP)
  • Finance or accounting
  • Humanitarian assistance
  • NGO operations
  • Development project implementation

Experience working on WFP-funded projects is highly desirable.

Experience collaborating with Financial Service Providers (FSPs) is considered an advantage.

Candidates with field-based emergency response experience will be particularly competitive.

Required Skills and Competencies

Strong documentation, reconciliation, and reporting skills.

High attention to detail and ability to manage sensitive financial data.

Strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask under pressure.

Excellent communication skills in English and Amharic.

Afan Oromo language proficiency is mandatory. Knowledge of additional local languages is an asset.

Computer literacy, including MS Office and digital data collection tools.

Ability to work effectively in multicultural and field-based environments.

High integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.

Strong understanding of accountability, collaboration, and teamwork principles.
