About the Role: The African Union (AU) is a unique Pan-African continental body focused on Africa’s integration and sustainable development. The Accounts Assistant provides support on accounting, treasury, and financial management functions at the Secretariat of the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC). The role ensures accurate financial management, reporting, and compliance with AU standards, supporting both internal and external audits.
Key Responsibilities:
Main Functions:
- Provide timely support in accounting, finance, and treasury areas
- Assist in activity planning and preparation of operational schedules
- Coordinate technical assistance and ensure operational processes are maintained
- Prepare office communication and draft reports
- Assist in data compilation and maintenance for budget monitoring
Specific Responsibilities:
- Assist in the preparation of financial statements and reports for audit
- Ensure accurate accounting, reporting, and internal control systems
- Process accounting documents (memos, DV, AV, etc.) timely and accurately
- Ensure expenditures comply with approved budgets
- Manage Imprest, travel claims, and other advances
- Conduct ageing analysis of Imprest and travel claims regularly
- Respond to internal and external audit queries and implement audit findings
- Post journal entries into SAP and reconcile interoffice accounts
- Upload bank data to SAP Bank Module and prepare reconciliation reports
- Investigate outstanding items on bank statements and follow up
- Follow currency revaluation procedures on SAP
- Process bank payments and ensure supporting documents are complete
- Process monthly payroll and related staff emoluments
- Maintain financial and personnel records up-to-date
- Ensure proper filing of receipts, vouchers, and supporting documents
- Assist SFO in applying financial and administrative policies and procedures
- Perform other tasks as required
Academic Requirements & Experience:
- Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance from a recognized institution
- Minimum 3 years (Diploma) or 2 years (Bachelor) of relevant work experience, preferably in international organizations
- Higher qualifications are an advantage
- Professional certifications (CPA, CIMA, ACCA) are preferred
- Experience with SAP is an advantage
Required Skills:
- Knowledge of IPSAS is an advantage
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
- Strong computer skills (MS Office, Internet applications, SAP)
- Ability to work in a team and multicultural environment
- Proficiency in at least one AU working language (English, French, Arabic, Portuguese, or Spanish); English and French commonly used

Remuneration: Indicative basic salary: US$ 15,758.00 per annum (GSA5 Step 1). Post adjustment: 57% of basic salary. Housing allowance: US$ 16,813.44 per annum. Education allowance: 100% tuition and other education-related expenses up to US$ 10,000 per child internationally; maximum US$ 3,300 per child locally.
