About the Role:
The Finance Assistant works under the supervision of the Field Finance Officer and is responsible for day-to-day finance operations, including cash and cheque handling, treasury management, compliance monitoring, customer service, and operational support. The role ensures accurate and timely financial reporting, supports the finance unit, and contributes to the ESP+ program’s seed insecurity response operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Treasury Management: Maintain sufficient funds, handle petty cash, process cash/cheque payments, ensure safe storage, and reconcile cash balances.
  • Compliance Monitoring: Check financial documents for internal control standards, verify authorizations, and report anomalies.
  • Customer Service: Ensure timely payments, maintain logs, communicate delays, and provide courteous responses to staff and external parties.
  • Operational Support: Assist with invoice collection, procurement documentation, and field support for admin, warehouse, and logistics tasks.
  • Financial Accounting: Provide cover for the Field Finance Officer, double-check authorizations, and perform other finance tasks as required.
  • Accountability & DEI: Support accountability mechanisms, promote a gender-equal and inclusive work culture, and adhere to Mercy Corps’ safeguarding and ethical standards.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field (compensating experience considered).
  • Minimum 3 years of progressive experience in NGOs/INGOs.
  • Competency in computerized general ledger systems and MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Fluency in English and Afar language.

Living & Work Conditions:

  • Field-based in Semera, with possible travel to project sites.
