United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA)

About the Organization

The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) is a premier knowledge institution established to deliver transformative ideas and actions for an empowered Africa. Operating under the mandates of the 2030 Agenda and Agenda 2063, the ECA serves as a vital link between global solutions and local continent-wide challenges. Our mission is to accelerate economic diversification, job creation, and innovative financing while advocating for Africa’s position in global governance.

Within the ECA, the Security and Safety Service (SSS) ensures that this mission can proceed in a safe and secure environment. We protect the people, property, and integrity of the United Nations compound in Addis Ababa, utilizing advanced security technologies and specialized canine units. Our work is grounded in the values of peace, security, and social inclusion, which are essential for the continent’s development nexus.

We pride ourselves on a culture of professionalism, kindness, and meticulous attention to detail. Whether maintaining complex security systems or caring for our working animals, every staff member contributes to the operational excellence of the United Nations. We foster an environment that values teamwork, discipline, and the highest ethical standards in public service.

Diversity and inclusion are at the heart of the United Nations’ values. FHI 360 and the ECA are committed to a workforce that reflects the diverse world we serve. We explicitly encourage women, qualified individuals from all ethnic backgrounds, and underrepresented groups to apply for these positions, as we believe a diverse team is essential for innovative problem-solving.

As an employer, the United Nations provides unparalleled opportunities for professional growth. Working within our compound offers exposure to international protocols and the chance to contribute to a global legacy of humanitarian and developmental success. We invest in our consultants and staff, ensuring they have the skills and support needed to maintain a world-class security infrastructure.

Job Description and Strategic Impact

The roles of Canine Caretaker and Technical Assistant are foundational to the safety of the ECA compound. These positions ensure that both the biological and mechanical systems of security are functioning at peak performance. By maintaining the health of our K9 unit and the reliability of our technical barriers, you provide the peace of mind necessary for international diplomats and experts to focus on Africa’s development.

For the Canine Caretaker, the strategic impact lies in the “wellbeing-security” link. A healthy, happy, and well-cared-for dog is a more effective partner in security operations. Your daily dedication to cleaning, feeding, and emotional care ensures that our canine assets are always ready for service, directly enhancing the security of the United Nations mission in Ethiopia.

For the Technical Assistant, the impact is found in the “operational-continuity” of our security systems. By maintaining bollards, traffic lights, and Arm barriers, you prevent technical failures that could compromise the safety of the compound. Your work on cable installations and firefighting pipes ensures that the physical infrastructure of the UN remains robust and responsive to any emergency.

A career in these roles offers significant professional development. You will learn to work within the specific protocols of the UN Secretariat, gaining experience in specialized security maintenance and animal husbandry. This experience is a prestigious addition to any professional portfolio, opening doors to future opportunities within the global UN network or the international security sector.

Both roles require individuals who are self-motivated and capable of working under general direction. You will be part of a team that values precision and reliability. Every kennel cleaned and every cable tray installed is a step toward a more secure environment, allowing the ECA to continue its vital work for the transformation of the African continent.
