position summary
the social development specialist will support world bank operations in ethiopia south sudan and sudan. the role focuses on social risk management social inclusion and compliance with the world bank environmental and social framework. the position is based in addis ababa and supports the central safeguards unit.

key duties and responsibilities
the specialist will advise task teams and government counterparts on social safeguards and environmental and social framework requirements throughout the project life cycle. responsibilities include supporting project preparation implementation and supervision to ensure bank financed projects are inclusive sustainable and socially responsible.

the role includes providing technical guidance on land acquisition involuntary resettlement livelihood restoration stakeholder engagement grievance redress mechanisms indigenous peoples cultural heritage and community health and safety. the specialist will conduct social due diligence prepare environmental and social risk review summaries environmental and social commitment plans and contribute to project appraisal documents and supervision reports.

requirements education
a master’s degree in social sciences or related fields such as development studies sociology social anthropology international development environmental sciences or sustainability management is required.

requirements experience
a minimum of five years of professional experience in managing social and environmental risks in development or infrastructure projects is required. experience in eastern and southern africa or sub saharan africa is an advantage.

requirements technical skills
demonstrated experience applying global safeguard frameworks such as the world bank environmental and social framework or ifc performance standards is required. strong expertise in social impact assessment land acquisition resettlement stakeholder engagement and grievance mechanisms is essential.

language requirements
excellent written and spoken proficiency in english and amharic is required.
