Senior Technical Officer – Environmental and Wastewater Surveillance (Africa CDC)

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) is a specialized technical institution of the African Union (AU). It supports AU Member States to detect, prevent, control, and respond to disease threats by strengthening surveillance systems, laboratory diagnostics, and emergency preparedness across the continent.

JOB DESCRIPTION
The Senior Technical Officer – Environmental and Wastewater Surveillance will lead Africa CDC’s environmental surveillance initiatives, with a primary focus on wastewater-based epidemiology. The role supports AU Member States in integrating environmental surveillance into national and continental public health systems.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and implement continental strategies and technical frameworks for environmental and wastewater surveillance.
  • Provide technical assistance to AU Member States.
  • Design and lead multi-country surveillance initiatives.
  • Integrate surveillance data into disease intelligence systems.
  • Coordinate with regional and international partners.
  • Facilitate training, workshops, and knowledge sharing.
  • Monitor program performance and prepare technical reports.
  • Represent Africa CDC in regional and global forums.

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION

  • Master’s degree in Environmental Health, Medical Microbiology, or related field with 7 years’ experience (3 at supervisory level), or
  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health, Medical Microbiology, or related field with 10 years’ experience (3 at supervisory level).

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Experience in public health surveillance and wastewater-based epidemiology.
  • Experience working with African public health institutions.
  • Proven experience in multi-country program implementation.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

  • Strong leadership and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Project planning and program management expertise.
  • Excellent communication and technical writing skills.
  • Ability to translate complex technical data into clear reports.
  • Strong computer and data analysis skills (R, ArcGIS, Excel, PowerPoint).

EMPLOYMENT TYPE AND SALARY

  • Contract Type: Appointment for Limited Duration (ALD)
  • Duration: 11 months (renewable)
  • Grade: P3
  • International Staff Salary: USD 88,844.56
  • Local Staff Salary: USD 68,255.99
