position context
Under the overall supervision of the Head of Programmes and the direct supervision of the Senior Programme Officer (Protection), the Protection Officer supports coordination and implementation of protection programming across the country office. The role contributes to protection in emergencies, migrant protection and assistance, child protection, counter-trafficking, gender-based violence response, and assistance to vulnerable migrants, while strengthening linkages with other thematic units.

key responsibilities
Support protection programming and protection mainstreaming across the country office
Provide technical, operational, financial, and administrative support to protection projects
Coordinate with UN agencies, government counterparts, NGOs, and community stakeholders
Support protection coordination meetings, working groups, and follow-up actions
Contribute to development of SOPs, guidelines, and case management tools
Support reporting, situation updates, lessons learned, and MEAL frameworks
Identify new protection interventions and contribute to proposals and concept notes
Support visibility and communication materials in coordination with the public information team
Conduct field visits to support programme implementation
Perform other duties as assigned

Required qualifications
Master’s degree in international relations, political science, humanitarian affairs, international studies, public or business administration, or a related field with two years of relevant experience, or a bachelor’s degree with four years of relevant experience from an accredited institution.

Experience in programme development, coordination, and capacity building
Experience working with government and international stakeholders
Strong project, budget, and reporting skills
Knowledge of UN systems, protection programming, and donor frameworks
Strong analytical, writing, communication, and coordination skills
High computer proficiency and ability to work under pressure

languages
Fluency in English is required
Working knowledge of Amharic is an advantage
