About the Role:
The Political Affairs Officer serves under the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General (PESG) for Sudan. The PESG leads political engagement with Sudanese, regional, and international actors to help end the Sudan conflict and revive a credible political process. The officer reports to the Principal Political Affairs Officer/Head of Office.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support good offices and political engagement efforts led by the PESG.
  • Contribute to coordination among mediation initiatives and stakeholders.
  • Monitor political developments related to Sudan and the region.
  • Provide analysis, reporting, advice, and political outreach.
  • Support mediation, facilitation, and dialogue processes.
  • Contribute to work on security arrangements, ceasefires, and related agreements.
  • Prepare reports, briefings, and analytical notes.
  • Participate in meetings, consultations, and information-gathering missions.

Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • Advanced university degree (Master’s) in political science, international relations, law, public administration, social sciences, economics, or related field.
    • First-level degree with two additional years of experience may be accepted.

Experience:

  • Minimum 7 years of progressively responsible experience in political affairs, international relations, conflict resolution, security, development, or similar fields.
  • Minimum 2 years of field experience in a UN peace operation or similar international organization, including work in Africa.
  • Experience in conflict or post-conflict settings.
  • Minimum 3 years in political outreach, analysis, facilitation, advice, and reporting.
  • Experience supporting good offices or mediation processes.
  • At least 3 years working on security arrangements, ceasefires, or cessation of hostilities.
  • Experience in Horn of Africa or Sudan issues is desirable.

Languages:

  • Required: English (UN Level III)
  • Desirable: Arabic (UN Level I)
