The Outbreak Response Epidemiologist supports rapid detection, investigation, and control of Marburg Virus Disease outbreaks. The role focuses on surveillance, data analysis, field investigations, and technical guidance to strengthen emergency response activities.
Responsibilities
Strengthen and manage Marburg Virus Disease surveillance. Support active case search, community surveillance, and early warning systems. Validate case definitions and reporting tools. Coordinate with health facilities and woreda health office for timely case notification. Conduct field investigations for alerts, suspected cases, and deaths. Map transmission chains and exposure events. Supervise specimen collection and laboratory confirmation procedures. Compile and analyze outbreak data. Produce situation reports, epidemic curves, and line lists. Provide epidemiological guidance for isolation, quarantine, and safe burials. Assess IPC practices in treatment centers and community settings. Support tracing teams and follow-up processes. Provide technical advice to incident management teams and district health authorities. Facilitate training for healthcare workers on surveillance and reporting. Participate in coordination meetings and emergency planning. Support community leaders in risk reduction. Document outbreak progression and lessons learned. Contribute to after-action reviews and preparedness planning.
Education
Master’s degree in Epidemiology, Public Health, Field Epidemiology, or related field.
Experience
Minimum 2 years of relevant work experience. Experience responding to viral hemorrhagic fevers such as Marburg or Ebola.
Skills
Strong data analysis skills. Knowledge of epidemiological principles, humanitarian health operations, and national/international health systems. Proficient in Microsoft Office and digital communication tools. Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
Location
Field-based in Jinka, with frequent travel to health facilities.
