Overview:
VSO Ethiopia is seeking a National Volunteer – Peace Building and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Advisor to support the RECAP Project. The role focuses on strengthening community-based peace mechanisms, disaster preparedness, and promoting resilience in cross-border communities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support community-based peacebuilding activities, including dialogues, mediation, and confidence-building
- Strengthen local peace committees and traditional conflict resolution structures
- Facilitate inclusive peace dialogues with elders, women, youth, and authorities
- Promote conflict-sensitive and do-no-harm approaches
- Support DRR initiatives, including risk assessments, contingency planning, and early warning awareness
- Integrate peacebuilding and DRR into climate adaptation and livelihood programs
- Conduct community sensitization and training on peace, social cohesion, and disaster preparedness
- Monitor and report on project activities and results
- Coordinate with local government, security actors, and cross-border stakeholders
- Adhere to safeguarding and volunteer ethical standards
Qualifications & Experience:
- Degree or equivalent experience in Agriculture, Agribusiness, Economics, Development Studies, Rural Development, Natural Resource Management, or related fields
- Experience in livelihoods, agriculture, or community development; work with pastoralist or agro-pastoralist communities is an advantage
- Exposure to climate resilience, food security, or market-based approaches is desirable
Skills:
- Community mobilization and facilitation
- Basic understanding of sustainable livelihoods and income-generating activities
- Field data collection and reporting
- Communication and interpersonal skills
- Willingness to work in remote and cross-border areas
- Basic computer skills (Word, Excel, email)
Languages:
- Fluency in English required
- Knowledge of Afan Oromo and local customs is highly desirable
