National Volunteer: Peace Building and DRR Advisor

Overview:
VSO Ethiopia is seeking a National Volunteer – Peace Building and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Advisor to support the RECAP Project. The role focuses on strengthening community-based peace mechanisms, disaster preparedness, and promoting resilience in cross-border communities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support community-based peacebuilding activities, including dialogues, mediation, and confidence-building
  • Strengthen local peace committees and traditional conflict resolution structures
  • Facilitate inclusive peace dialogues with elders, women, youth, and authorities
  • Promote conflict-sensitive and do-no-harm approaches
  • Support DRR initiatives, including risk assessments, contingency planning, and early warning awareness
  • Integrate peacebuilding and DRR into climate adaptation and livelihood programs
  • Conduct community sensitization and training on peace, social cohesion, and disaster preparedness
  • Monitor and report on project activities and results
  • Coordinate with local government, security actors, and cross-border stakeholders
  • Adhere to safeguarding and volunteer ethical standards

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Degree or equivalent experience in Agriculture, Agribusiness, Economics, Development Studies, Rural Development, Natural Resource Management, or related fields
  • Experience in livelihoods, agriculture, or community development; work with pastoralist or agro-pastoralist communities is an advantage
  • Exposure to climate resilience, food security, or market-based approaches is desirable

Skills:

  • Community mobilization and facilitation
  • Basic understanding of sustainable livelihoods and income-generating activities
  • Field data collection and reporting
  • Communication and interpersonal skills
  • Willingness to work in remote and cross-border areas
  • Basic computer skills (Word, Excel, email)

Languages:

  • Fluency in English required
  • Knowledge of Afan Oromo and local customs is highly desirable
