Background
African Parks is a non-profit organization managing national parks across Africa in partnership with governments and local communities. Gambella National Park, established in 1973, covers 4,575 km² and hosts species such as Nile Lechwe, elephants, lions, endangered giraffes, and shoebills. It also supports the white-eared kob migration — the largest land mammal migration on earth.
Job Overview
The GIS Technician will assist in geo-spatial data collection, management, and analysis for APN Ethiopia. The role supports land-use planning, data integration, and training personnel on standardized GIS methods.
Key Responsibilities
- Set up and maintain a GIS unit and spatial data databases.
- Assist in ecological data collection and analysis.
- Collaborate with Law Enforcement and Community teams for GIS support.
- Produce maps and GIS tools for management and community education.
- Monitor key species and support wildlife protection.
- Support student interns and researchers.
- Ensure security of staff and assets.
Success Indicators
- Fully functional GIS unit following AP best practices.
- Data collected, mapped, and stored in relevant databases.
- Accurate and accessible maps for management and reporting.
- Support for Land Use Planning, law enforcement, and education programs.
- Safe and secure operations with zero theft and accidents.
Job Requirements
- Education: BSc in geography, wildlife conservation, or related field with GIS focus.
- Experience: Minimum 3 years in spatial analysis, GIS, or database management.
- Experience with GIS software (ArcGIS, Earth Ranger) and data collection apps (Survey123, KOBO).
- Experience working in remote areas; familiarity with bush life.
- Fluent in English; local languages are an asset.
- Strong analytical skills, adaptability, attention to detail, and problem-solving ability.
- Physically fit and able to work in field conditions.
- Ethiopian nationality preferred; age between 20–40 years.
