The position is housed within RTI’s Center for International Development. This center leads large-scale development programs across sectors such as agriculture, health, water, energy, and education. This specific role supports a five-year USDA Food for Progress program in Ethiopia. The program applies a market-driven, U.S.-led value chain approach to transform Ethiopia’s sunflower sector. The initiative aims to increase agricultural productivity, improve market linkages, enhance access to finance, and address policy constraints that limit sector growth.
By joining this program, the Accountant will contribute directly to strengthening Ethiopia’s agricultural economy while supporting transparent and accountable management of international development funds.
Job Description
The Accountant will play a central role in ensuring strong financial management systems for the project. The position is responsible for overseeing payroll, cash management, budgeting, vendor payments, and financial reporting.
The role ensures that project funds are disbursed and reported accurately, cost-effectively, and in compliance with RTI policies and donor regulations. Strong internal controls and proper documentation will be key responsibilities.
The Accountant will track and review project expenses, prepare monthly financial reports, and identify any discrepancies or financial risks. Timely reporting will support effective program implementation and donor accountability.
The position involves coordinating financial projections, including monthly, quarterly, and annual forecasts. The Accountant will also manage biweekly cash requirements and pipeline estimates to ensure smooth financial operations.
Cash management responsibilities include maintaining RTI bank accounts, reconciling cash accounts, overseeing petty cash, and submitting monthly bank reconciliation reports.
The Accountant will issue payments on time and record daily financial transactions in QuickBooks. Maintaining accurate and organized accounting records will be critical for audits and compliance reviews.
The role also requires managing advances and payable aging, ensuring proper follow-up and timely processing of financial documents.
Tax compliance is another essential function. The Accountant will prepare tax withholding vouchers, reconcile tax records with ledgers, submit VAT refund requests, and maintain supporting documentation.
Additionally, the Accountant will assist in preparing financial statements and cost accounting reports for RTI, USDA, and relevant Ethiopian authorities.
Monthly payroll preparation and maintaining organized accounting files will also form part of the responsibilities. The role may include supporting audits, conducting spot checks, and participating in process improvement initiatives.
Educational Qualification
Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree with at least five years of relevant experience, or a Master’s degree with at least three years of relevant experience. Equivalent combinations of education and professional experience will also be considered.
Professional accounting training is required. Candidates must hold or be eligible for Chartered Accountant (CA) or Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification.
Work Experience
Candidates should have experience working in accounting or finance roles, preferably within U.S. government-funded projects.
Experience working with financial and banking institutions in Ethiopia is highly desirable.
A strong understanding of Ethiopian tax laws and regulatory frameworks is essential.
Experience managing donor-funded budgets, preparing financial projections, and ensuring regulatory compliance will be considered an advantage.
Required Skills and Competencies
Strong oral and written communication skills are essential for preparing reports and coordinating with stakeholders.
Applicants must demonstrate strong organizational skills and high attention to detail.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint, is required.
Hands-on experience with QuickBooks accounting software is mandatory.
Candidates should demonstrate integrity, professionalism, and the ability to maintain confidentiality.
The ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, prioritize tasks, and collaborate effectively in a team environment is crucial.

The position is based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
