Purpose of Service: The Ophthalmologist will ensure the delivery of high-quality eye care to UN staff and their dependents, including accurate diagnosis, effective treatment, and appropriate referrals for complex cases. The role contributes to early detection and management of eye conditions, promotes eye health awareness, and upholds professional ethics and confidentiality.
Work Location: UN Health Care Center, Addis Ababa
Expected Duration: 9 months
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide consultation services to UN staff to diagnose eye problems
- Institute treatment and conduct follow-up visits to evaluate patient progress
- Perform and request supplementary diagnostic tests as needed
- Recommend appropriate medical treatments, including medications, surgeries, and other strategies
- Work closely with CMO, MOs, and OIC to determine optimal management, including referrals within the country
- Conduct routine check-ups for early detection and employment purposes, particularly for drivers and specialized staff such as security officers
- Write educational newsletters on eye conditions for UN staff awareness
- Participate in monthly continuous medical education and present ophthalmology topics to UNHCC personnel
- Initiate medical evacuation for acute, life-threatening ophthalmic emergencies in consultation with CMO
- Interpret results, explain conditions, and guide patients on treatment in an understandable manner
- Assist patients in obtaining treatment, coordinating with pharmacists and CMO for medication availability
- Maintain empathy, confidentiality, and ethical standards at all times
- Inform CMO/Deputy or head nurse of cases referred to other medical facilities for proper follow-up
- Prepare detailed medical reports for referrals and approvals for evacuation abroad
- Conduct medical examinations for employment purposes, including entry, periodic, and exit exams
- Record medical information in EarthMed for medical clearance for travel and transfers
- Collaborate with other physicians and paramedics to finalize patient diagnoses
- Present public lectures to UN staff and dependents on eye health issues
Qualifications / Special Skills:
- First degree in General Medicine with specialization in Ophthalmology
- Minimum 5 years of work experience in Ophthalmology
- Experience with electronic medical record systems (EarthMed)
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and internet applications
Languages:
- Fluency in oral and written English is required
- Knowledge of another official UN language is an advantage
