Job Description

The Driver and Messenger will be responsible for operating assigned vehicles safely and ensuring the reliable transportation of staff, visitors, and organizational materials. The role requires strict adherence to road safety regulations and organizational policies.

The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that the assigned vehicle is maintained in good condition and ready for daily operations. This includes performing routine checks such as monitoring engine oil levels, water levels, tire pressure, fuel levels, and battery conditions before every trip.

The driver will also be responsible for keeping the vehicle clean and ensuring that all necessary accessories and tools are available and properly maintained.

Another key responsibility will be maintaining a detailed vehicle logbook that records mileage, fuel consumption, oil usage, travel destinations, passengers, and the purpose of each trip. Proper documentation ensures accountability and helps the organization track transportation usage efficiently.

The driver will support office operations by transporting staff members to meetings, field visits, and official events when required. The role may also involve traveling to project areas and sometimes staying overnight during field assignments.

The position also includes messenger duties. The driver will collect and deliver letters, official documents, parcels, and other materials on behalf of the organization. These deliveries may involve visits to government offices, partner organizations, and other institutions.

The role also includes assisting the office with various administrative tasks such as photocopying, filing documents, and purchasing office supplies such as stationery and operational materials.

The driver will also help prepare and organize materials and equipment needed for field missions, workshops, and meetings. This includes ensuring that items are packed safely and transported securely.

In case of vehicle defects or mechanical issues, the driver must immediately report the problem to the Logistics and Supply Chain Coordinator and arrange necessary repairs. The driver will also perform minor maintenance tasks when possible.

The position requires careful driving at all times with full compliance to traffic regulations and speed limits. The safety of passengers, vehicles, and transported materials is a top priority.

The driver must also ensure that their driving license remains valid and renewed on time. Driving organizational vehicles with an expired or suspended license is strictly prohibited.

In the event of accidents or incidents, the driver must immediately inform the supervisor and the nearest traffic authority to ensure proper reporting and follow-up.

This role provides an opportunity to work closely with different teams within the organization and contribute to efficient program implementation.

Educational Qualification

Applicants should have appropriate qualifications related to driving and vehicle maintenance.

Minimum qualifications include:

• Valid Driving License
• Training or certification in Auto Mechanics, General Mechanics, or related technical fields is desirable.

Candidates with additional mechanical training will have an advantage as they can assist in basic vehicle maintenance and troubleshooting.

Work Experience

Applicants must demonstrate solid professional driving experience.

Minimum requirements include:

• At least 5 years of professional driving experience, particularly with 4WD vehicles.
• Experience driving in both urban and rural environments.
• Experience supporting field activities and transporting staff in development or organizational settings is considered an advantage.

Candidates should also be familiar with basic vehicle maintenance and safety procedures.

Required Skills and Competencies

Language skills are also important for this role. Candidates should be able to communicate effectively in Amharic, and a good working knowledge of English is preferred.

Candidates must also be willing to travel for field assignments and occasionally stay overnight when supporting project activities.
