About the Job
The Danish Refugee Council (DRC), one of the world’s leading humanitarian NGOs, is seeking a qualified Protection Assistant – Psychosocial Support (PSS) for its North Area Office in Mekelle, Tigray.
Under the supervision of the Protection Team Leader, the Protection Assistant (PSS) provides compassionate, trauma-informed psychosocial support to individuals, families, and groups experiencing challenging circumstances. The role involves assessing client needs, developing care plans, coordinating referrals, and strengthening community-based psychosocial support to promote resilience and well-being.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide individual psychosocial support to DRC persons of concern.
- Design and deliver psychoeducational awareness sessions on stress management, coping skills, and available mental health services.
- Collaborate with healthcare professionals and social workers for referrals and follow-up.
- Foster community participation in psychosocial activities and support local stakeholders.
- Identify and strengthen local resources such as community-based organizations and volunteers.
- Participate in training and capacity-building sessions as needed.
- Contribute to developing and updating service mapping of available resources.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Protection Team Leader.
Experience and Technical Competencies
- Minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Experience providing psychosocial support in humanitarian settings.
- Previous work with IDPs or returnees is an asset.
- Knowledge of community-based protection and mental health resources.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel); knowledge of data tools like Activity Info is desirable.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
Language
- Proficiency in English required.
- Knowledge of the local language is an advantage.
