Job Description and Strategic Impact

The role of the AI Governance & Data Protection Expert is a critical, high-impact position designed to steward the responsible deployment of emerging technologies within the World Health Organization’s regional framework. As SoCha prepares to serve as the prime contractor for the MSC Unit, this expert will act as the primary architect for the “Responsible AI” framework. This work is not merely technical; it is a foundational effort to ensure that AI-driven predictive analytics and decision-support systems are safe, transparent, and ethically sound.

In this capacity, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to shape how health data is processed and protected in an era of rapid digital evolution. The position requires a unique blend of technical expertise and regulatory acumen, enabling the expert to bridge the gap between complex AI lifecycles and the legal requirements of institutions like the WHO. This is a unique opportunity to work on a large-scale project with global visibility and long-term implications.

The “day-to-day” impact of this role involves active participation in safeguarding digital integrity. From designing protocols that mitigate algorithmic bias to conducting rigorous data protection impact assessments, the expert’s work will directly determine the trustworthiness of the tools being deployed. By ensuring that analytical outputs are free from systemic disparities, the expert plays an essential role in improving health outcomes across the African continent.

Professional growth in this role is substantial, as it offers the chance to lead policy and regulatory alignment for a multi-year, high-stakes contract. The expert will not only be applying existing knowledge of frameworks like the EU AI Act but will also be contributing to the future-proofing of digital health systems. This experience is highly sought after and will position the candidate as a leader in the intersection of ethics, law, and artificial intelligence.

Mentorship and knowledge sharing form another significant part of the impact. By designing training modules and fostering AI literacy among WHO staff, the expert ensures that the organizational capacity for responsible data use is strengthened long after the initial implementation. This focus on institutional growth means the expert’s influence will be felt across the entire ecosystem, promoting a more informed and capable public health workforce.
