Job Description
The Protection Assistant – Monitoring will play a key role in implementing protection monitoring activities in Mai-Tsebri and surrounding areas. The position focuses on assessing and addressing protection risks affecting IDPs, returnees, and host communities.

The role involves regular field visits to collect data, identify vulnerabilities, and ensure that individuals at risk receive appropriate support and referrals. The position also contributes to improving protection strategies through accurate reporting and analysis.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Protection Team Leader and receive technical guidance from protection specialists and officers. This creates a strong learning environment for developing practical field skills in humanitarian protection work.

The position directly contributes to improving the safety, dignity, and well-being of vulnerable populations. It offers a unique opportunity to engage with communities, understand their challenges, and support meaningful interventions.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting protection monitoring visits in assigned locations
  • Collecting and recording data using approved tools and systems
  • Identifying protection risks and trends through interviews and observations
  • Referring individuals at risk to appropriate services
  • Supporting the delivery of individual protection assistance
  • Conducting awareness sessions on protection risks and prevention strategies
  • Monitoring access to services and effectiveness of referrals
  • Engaging with community structures in a culturally appropriate manner
  • Supporting multi-sectoral assessments and protection activities
  • Ensuring ethical and secure data collection practices

Educational Qualification
Applicants must have a university degree or diploma in one of the following fields:

  • Social Sciences
  • Law
  • Social Work
  • International Development
  • Or any other related discipline from a recognized institution

This educational background provides the foundation needed to understand protection principles and humanitarian work.

Work Experience
Candidates should have a minimum of one year of relevant experience in humanitarian or protection-related roles.

Experience working with international NGOs, UN agencies, or government institutions is highly desirable. Exposure to working with displaced or conflict-affected populations will be considered an advantage.

Hands-on experience in protection monitoring, assessments, or community engagement will significantly strengthen an application.

Required Skills and Competencies
Applicants should demonstrate strong technical and interpersonal skills, including:

  • Experience with data collection tools such as Kobo and Activity Info
  • Ability to analyze data and prepare clear reports
  • Strong organizational and planning skills
  • Ability to work independently and within a team
  • Problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel

Language requirements:

  • Fluency in English, Amharic, and Tigrigna (spoken and written)

Job Location
The position is based in Mai-Tsebri, Ethiopia. The role requires frequent fieldwork in IDP sites and surrounding communities.

Employment Type and Salary
This is a full-time position under a national contract.

The contract duration is 4 months, with the possibility of extension depending on performance and project needs.

Salary and benefits will be provided in accordance with the Danish Refugee Council’s Terms of Employment for national staff.
