Job Description:
The Protection Assistant – Monitoring will work under the supervision of the Project Manager and technical guidance of the Protection Specialist – Monitoring. The role focuses on implementing protection monitoring activities in selected refugee sites and host communities in Assosa, Benishangul-Gumuz, and surrounding areas.

The position involves conducting regular protection monitoring visits, collecting and encoding data, identifying individuals at risk, referring cases for specialized assistance, and reporting on emerging protection risks and trends. The role also contributes to other protection activities carried out by DRC in the designated project locations, offering direct support to people with specific needs.

The Protection Assistant – Monitoring will collaborate with community structures, engage in awareness-raising initiatives, and support DRC’s efforts to improve protection service delivery. This position provides a strong foundation for developing technical skills in protection monitoring, data collection, and reporting while gaining practical exposure to humanitarian programming in Ethiopia.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct protection monitoring in assigned areas, observing protection risks and trends.
  • Contribute to the development, review, and testing of protection monitoring tools and plans.
  • Collect and encode data in line with DRC’s protection monitoring standards using online tools such as Kobo or Activity Info.
  • Conduct interviews, focus group discussions, and observations to identify protection needs.
  • Identify and refer individuals at risk for specialized assistance.
  • Support coordination and implementation of Individual Protection Assistance activities.
  • Monitor beneficiaries’ access to services and the effectiveness of referrals and assistance.
  • Collaborate with Community Based Protection Networks (CBPN) to conduct community awareness-raising and information dissemination.
  • Maintain relationships with CBPNs and stakeholders to gather updated information on displacements and protection concerns.
  • Participate in protection and multisectoral assessments.
  • Ensure ethical and safe data collection, observing data protection protocols throughout the monitoring process.
  • Support the preparation of daily, weekly, and monthly reports, contributing to protection monitoring analysis.
  • Document all activities to track project progress and effectiveness.
  • Participate in trainings on Protection Information Management and other relevant topics.

Educational Qualification:

  • University degree or diploma in social sciences, law, social work, international development, or other relevant fields from a recognized institution.

Work Experience:

  • Minimum of one year of experience in humanitarian response, refugee, or IDP protection, preferably with international NGOs, UN agencies, or relevant local authorities.
  • Experience in protection monitoring or assessments using online data collection tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with displaced or conflict-affected populations.

Required Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong planning, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Integrity, strong work ethic, and ability to meet deadlines under pressure.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and familiarity with Kobo or other data collection tools.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, Amharic, and other local languages.
  • Commitment to ethical standards, DRC values, and safeguarding principles.
  • Awareness of protection principles, data protection, and humanitarian standards.

Job Location:
Assosa Field Office, Benishangul-Gumuz, Ethiopia. The position involves field visits to refugee sites and host communities to ensure accurate monitoring and support to at-risk individuals.
