Job Description
The Digital Communications Intern will play a vital role in supporting the office’s outreach and information dissemination efforts. The primary focus of this role is to assist in the creation, management, and optimization of digital content that highlights the collaborative work between the UN and the African Union.
Day-to-day responsibilities include drafting social media posts, monitoring digital platforms for relevant news, and assisting in the production of multimedia content. The intern will help maintain the office’s digital presence, ensuring that messaging is consistent, engaging, and aligned with the UN’s global communication strategies.
Beyond technical tasks, the intern will participate in departmental meetings and brainstorming sessions. This exposure allows for a deeper understanding of how strategic communication influences policy and public perception. Educational Qualification
To qualify for this internship, applicants must meet one of the following educational requirements:
- Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
- Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).
The field of study must be closely related to the type of internship being applied for. Relevant fields include Communications, Media Studies, Public Relations, Journalism, International Relations, Political Science, General Studies, and Peace and Security Studies.
Work Experience
Applicants to the United Nations Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. The program is specifically designed for students and recent graduates to gain their first exposure to the UN system.
However, any prior experience—including volunteer work, student leadership, or previous internships—in managing digital platforms, creating visual content, or supporting communication campaigns will be considered a distinct advantage.
The UN seeks individuals who are proactive and eager to learn. While professional history is not a prerequisite, a demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter are essential for success in this role.
Required Skills and Competencies
Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in standard office software, specifically Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. These tools are essential for the administrative and organizational aspects of the communications department.
In addition to office software, familiarity with social media platforms and digital content creation tools is highly valued. Specifically, knowledge of Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, and various video editing software will enable the intern to contribute effectively to visual storytelling projects.

Employment Type and Salary
