The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) is a premier continental institution dedicated to promoting sustainable economic and social development across Africa. Its Technology, Innovation, Connectivity, and Infrastructure Division (TICID) leads the ECA’s work on innovation, frontier technologies, and digital transformation, supporting member states in harnessing technology for inclusive development.
This internship provides exposure to policy research, data analysis, and technical advisory work in emerging digital technologies, helping interns gain hands-on experience in international development and governance.
Job Description:
The Research and Analysis Intern will support the Emerging and Frontier Technologies Section (ETIDTS) under the supervision of the Chief of Section. The intern will contribute to research, technical support, and advocacy on innovation and digital transformation initiatives across Africa.
Key Responsibilities:
- Parliamentary Documents & Technical Research:
- Conduct literature reviews and data synthesis to support preparation of reports and session documents for the Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development (COM) and the Africa Regional Forum on Sustainable Development (ARFSD).
- Draft background reports, key messages, and outcome documents integrating insights on emerging technologies.
- Substantive Convenings:
- Assist in preparation and reporting for high-level forums such as the Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) Forum, Africa WSIS Regional Review, and African Internet Governance Forum (AfIGF).
- Organize multi-stakeholder inputs and develop technical presentations for forums and workshops.
- Situational Analysis:
- Conduct country-level research and situational studies on Artificial Intelligence (AI), Data Governance, Cybersecurity, Fintech, Digital ID, Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), and Digital Skills.
- Synthesize data sets and academic literature to support project design and regulatory framework development.
- Content Creation & Management:
- Assist in creating digital content, including infographics and social media posts, to communicate section initiatives.
- Update and maintain the section’s websites and digital platforms, such as the Africa AI Innovations Database and ICT Tax Impact Calculator.
Educational Qualification:
- Enrolled in or completed a graduate program (master’s or equivalent) or
- Enrolled in or completed the final year of a bachelor’s degree program.
- Field of study should be closely related to digital technologies, data analysis, or innovation.
Work Experience:
- No prior professional experience is required.
- Interns should demonstrate interest in international development, digital technologies, and research.

- Strong analytical and research skills.
- Ability to synthesize complex information into actionable insights.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Proficiency in standard computer software applications.
- Ability to work in a multicultural and collaborative environment.

Languages:
- Fluency in English is required.
- Knowledge of French or another UN language is an advantage.
Job Location:
- Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in-person at the ECA Compound.
Employment Type and Duration:
- Full-time internship for 6 months.
- Interns work 35 hours per week under the supervision of assigned staff.
Salary:
- This is an unpaid internship. Interns are responsible for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses.
