Position Overview
The Social Development Specialist will advise on social risk management and inclusion for Bank-financed projects in Ethiopia, South Sudan, and Sudan.

As part of a multidisciplinary team, the Specialist ensures projects comply with the World Bank Environmental and Social Framework (ESF) and implement strategies for sustainable social outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance on ESF compliance, social risk management, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Support project preparation, appraisal, and supervision including operational missions.
  • Conduct social due diligence and prepare ESRS, ESCP, and other E&S instruments.
  • Advise government agencies on resettlement, livelihood restoration, grievance mechanisms, and gender-based risks.
  • Contribute to policy dialogue, portfolio reviews, and analytical work to promote social inclusion.
  • Ensure timely reporting and monitoring of social risk management across projects.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Master’s degree in Social Sciences (Development Studies, Sociology, Anthropology, International Development, or related field).
  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience in social and environmental risk management in infrastructure, energy, urban development, water, or agriculture projects.
  • Knowledge of global sustainability frameworks (World Bank ESF, IFC Performance Standards, AfDB Safeguards).
  • Experience in fragile, conflict, and violence-affected settings is an advantage.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and analytical skills.
  • Fluency in English and Amharic.
  • Willingness to travel frequently within Ethiopia, South Sudan, and Sudan.
