Hiring Organization: World Vision Ethiopia
Category: Social Sciences and Community Service
Application Deadline: December 5, 2025
The Development Officer plays a central role in leading and coordinating I-WASH sanitation and hygiene activities at the Area Program level. The position ensures that communities receive consistent support to improve their sanitation practices and create healthier living environments.
The role focuses on facilitating community-based sanitation and hygiene interventions that directly contribute to the wellbeing of children. It involves guiding the implementation of yearly WASH plans, ensuring activities are aligned with World Vision Ethiopia’s I-WASH program strategy.
A key responsibility is conducting hygiene promotion activities through campaigns, home-to-home education, and community gatherings. These activities aim to increase awareness, improve behavioral practices, and encourage communities to adopt healthier hygiene habits.
The Development Officer also works closely with triggered villages to monitor progress toward achieving open-defecation-free status. This includes continuous follow-up, community engagement, and ensuring that targeted kebeles reach and sustain 100% ODF certification.
Supporting community structures is another important part of the role. The officer helps communities organize themselves for I-WASH design, implementation, monitoring, and decision-making, fostering ownership and long-term sustainability.
The position contributes to maintaining the functionality of WASH facilities, including water utilities, improved sanitation structures, and household handwashing stations. Ensuring that these facilities are properly used and managed is critical for lasting health improvements.
Regular reporting is required, including activity reports, progress updates, and documentation of success stories. These reports support transparency and help share best practices across the program.
The Development Officer integrates sponsorship standards into every stage of program planning and implementation. This includes monitoring registered children, coordinating with volunteers, and ensuring child wellbeing remains at the center of all activities.
The role also supports capacity development for volunteers and institutions involved in sponsorship communications and community mobilization. Effective capacity building ensures stronger community partnerships and sustainable program outcomes.
Cross-cutting themes such as child protection, gender, disability inclusion, environmental sustainability, and humanitarian emergency preparedness are embedded throughout the program to ensure that all interventions are inclusive and impactful.
