About Gambella National Park
Established in 1973, Gambella National Park covers 4,575 km² and supports diverse wildlife, including Nile Lechwe, elephants, lions, giraffes, and shoebills. The park also hosts the world’s largest land mammal migration — the white-eared kob migration between South Sudan and Ethiopia.
Job Overview
The Safeguards Manager ensures the implementation of African Parks’ Safeguards Program and Policies in Gambella National Park. The role focuses on preventing potential abuses, mitigating risks, and promoting a safe and respectful environment for all.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct research, monitoring, and data collection related to safeguards.
- Identify and manage risks outlined in the Environmental and Social Action Plan (ESAP).
- Develop and implement community-based grievance mechanisms and conflict prevention frameworks.
- Review and resolve community complaints in collaboration with park management.
- Ensure Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) processes during community engagement.
- Oversee safeguards monitoring, audits, and field visits.
- Train rangers on human rights, inclusive conservation, and gender-sensitive practices.
- Develop disciplinary frameworks and staff capacity-building programs.
- Coordinate with regional government to establish early warning and awareness systems.
Education and Experience
- MSc degree in Political Science, Law, International Relations, Development, or related Social Sciences.
- 8+ years of relevant experience, with 5 years in a senior role.
- Strong knowledge of safeguards and humanitarian standards.
- Experience working in the Gambella region or similar contexts.
- Excellent analytical, communication, and legal reporting skills.
- High integrity and ability to work independently in field conditions.
